How Math Reading Passages are Different

We're actively working to make more of our Math lessons literacy-based, and we're doing it differently than our Science and Social Studies lessons. In general, Math lessons either focus on a concept or a process. In both cases, we start the reading passage by describing a real-world situation where the concept or process applies. In the example above, the reading passage describes how the interquartile range (IQR) is used to analyze students' height.

In lessons focused on a process, the reading passage also uses procedural language to describe the steps to complete the process. You'll notice transition words like first, next, and then. This, combined with small-group conversations based on the visual, result in retention and understanding that students might miss from a traditional lecture.

What do you think about the Math reading passages? Leave us a comment on one of the lessons and we'll respond!
