VNG Teacher Spotlight: Veronica Caballero
Veronica Caballero received the award for Science Teacher of the Month for May. At Gutierrez Arts and Sciences Middle School in Harlingen CISD, Veronica is an avid proponent of the VNG. Veronica says:
One effective method I use weekly is to incorporate structured conversations into our daily warm-ups by introducing each new science topic through thought-provoking questions or scenarios that encourage students to discuss their current understanding and predictions. We use think-pair-share activities to allow students to express their ideas and hear diverse perspectives. The Visual Non-Glossary provides my students with a daily warm-up which allows them to talk with each other about their prior knowledge on the topic and support one another with key vocabulary, as well as make their own predictions/observations through the visuals displayed in the slides. We do this before we begin each of our lessons.
Journal writing is another powerful tool. We encourage our students to maintain science journals where they can write and reflect on their learning every day, by connection new knowledge to prior experiences. These activities strengthen our students’ ability to articulate and synthesize information about their own learning.
Harlingen CISD put together this spotlight honoring her work with the VNG. We're deeply grateful for the amazing work that Veronica and HCISD are doing!
